Pros:
Chunking is an excellent studying resource. It allows you to take information, and organize it in a way that will allow you to recall it quickly and efficiently. Students can use chunking in social studies, math, science, and even reading. In fact, first graders use chunking everyday through phonics! Cons: Chunking is not good for remembering single bits of information. An example would be the definition to a word. A student cannot remember this by chunking the information. For this type of learning, other study methods should be utilized. There is also some controversy on children remembering the chunked information in the correct order. For instance, if a student chunks a word, and remembers it, but cannot remember the letters in the correct order, they will spell the word wrong. |
